Estimate the Material Needed to Enclose a Scaffold
A sheeting take-off starts with the part of the scaffold that will actually be covered, not simply the dimensions of the building. A straight elevation can be measured from its run length and sheeted height, while returns and differently sized faces are better calculated separately.
The calculator converts those measurements into a usable material quantity. Individual-sheet mode works with sheet width, sheet height and overlaps. Roll mode works out the number of full-height drops that can be cut from each roll, making the result more practical than relying on square metres alone.
Why Overlap Changes the Number of Sheets
Sheet dimensions and effective coverage are not the same thing. Once two neighbouring pieces overlap, part of the second piece no longer contributes new coverage. The same applies where sheets are stacked vertically.
Rather than dividing scaffold area by sheet area, the calculator reduces the useful coverage of every repeated sheet by the overlap you enter. This gives a more realistic count across long elevations where a small lap is repeated many times.
Roll Sheeting Needs a Different Calculation
Roll sheeting is treated as a series of full-height vertical drops. The calculator first works out how many drops are needed across the scaffold run, then checks how many complete drops can be cut from a single roll.
This matters because unused material at the end of a roll may not be long enough for another drop. A roll can therefore contain enough total square metres on paper while still being unable to provide the required number of continuous lengths.
Measure Different Faces Separately
Front elevations, gable ends, rear elevations and short returns rarely share exactly the same dimensions. Where measurements differ, run the calculator once for each face and add the quantities afterwards.
This is particularly useful on irregular buildings, chimney access scaffolds and enclosures that stop or start at different heights. Separate calculations make it easier to see where cutting and additional overlaps are likely to occur.
Use an Extra Allowance for Real Site Conditions
A mathematical layout assumes every sheet arrives usable and every cut goes exactly as planned. Real projects can involve damaged material, awkward junctions, trimming, openings and offcuts that cannot be reused.
The extra-allowance field lets you add spare material after the basic layout has been calculated. It remains editable because a simple rectangular elevation should not automatically receive the same allowance as a heavily interrupted enclosure.
Sheeting Quantity Is Not a Scaffold Design Check
This calculator deliberately stops at material quantity. Sheeting changes how wind acts on a scaffold, so the fact that a certain number of sheets fit the elevation does not mean the existing scaffold is suitable for enclosure.
HSE advises that scaffold suppliers or designers should be told before sheeting or debris netting is fitted. The cladding type, fixing arrangement, ties and scaffold configuration must be dealt with through the appropriate scaffold information or design rather than inferred from a material calculator.
